cake pulls

Cake pulls are a tradition in New Orleans weddings. I don't know if it is a southern thing, or a New Orleans thing - but I look forward to them at our wedding! Check out these from Mignon Faget, a local jeweler in New Orleans. From left they represent marriage, eternal beauty, luck, red hot romance, prosperity, opportunity, stability, and true love.

For a visual - here is a photo from my friend Erin's wedding (congrats!) where the bridesmaids have gathered around the cake to claim their cake pulls.

cute clutch

Wouldn't these make the cutest bridesmaids gifts? They are made by Eclu (see her Etsy store). I saw them on Snippet and Ink this morning. She puts together amazing mood boards like this one below... seriously gorgeous.

Pierre Hardy for Gap

I am obsessed with these boots from Gap, coming out this fall. They are part of a collaboration between Gap and Pierre Hardy. I would love them in this gray color. It has been a while since I really loved something from the Gap...

bridal bag?

I just found this J. Crew bag on sale. Could it be the perfect wedding clutch? I am not sure a bride really needs a bag on the big day, but it sure is cute!

french linen bench

I stumbled across this bench in a catalog sent to the house yesterday called Wisteria. I love the French linen look, so I immediately started picturing it our bedroom under a big window. I have been looking for ways to improve our bedroom, which right now is pretty bare. However, the price is a bit steep. What do you think of it? Worth the splurge?

amazing flowers

small stump and studio choo is a beautiful blog that posts about flowers and crafts. I LOVE their taste in flowers. I believe that they are local to the bay area.

This is exactly the kind of flower arrangement I would want at our wedding - messy, full of foliage and gorgeous layered flowers. It looks like it was created from a backyard garden.

Wouldn't these make adorable favor bags for a country wedding?

st. john the baptist

Here is a photo of St. John the Baptist in New Orleans, the church where will be getting married. It is the same church where my parents were married in 1980. Isn't it beautiful? It is now closed for everything except weddings and funerals. I had always thought that I would be married at Our Lady of Good Council, but it was closed by the archdiocese of New Orleans about a year ago.

With such a pretty church, I am not sure that we will do much in terms of flowers. My mom sent me this pretty photo of candles with fabric and flowers (below). The church has candle holders (see the photo above), so we will just have to decorate them.

Not sure the swags of fabric would work in our case (it would keep people from getting in the pews), but it is a pretty photo for inspiration.

andrea getting married

Last Friday a bunch of us got together to celebrate Andrea's upcoming wedding. Shanna, her maid of honor, threw her a bachelorette party weekend. Friday night involved drinks, girlie movies, and silly games. Saturday night involved a flight to Vegas for a Sex and the City themed night of fun. I was not able to go to Vegas, but I had a great time hanging out with the girls.

Andrea's bachelorette gift from her sister and Shanna - white shoes for Vegas.

We ate Andrea's favorite foods prepared by Shanna - peach rings, sushi, and pumpkin pie.

We played silly bachelorette games - let's just say this is the before picture. It was a pin the tail on the donkey type of game...

Congratulations to both of you! Excited for the upcoming wedding.

the one

I bought my wedding dress this weekend! I got it at Marina Morrison in San Francisco. My sister was with me in April when I first saw the dress, and my mom was there with me this weekend when I bought it. We went to three stores together, although the entire time I knew that the right dress was waiting at the last stop of the day. It was the dress that haunted me.

I have decided not to post a photo of it on the blog until after the wedding. However, here are some photos of the frogs that I had to kiss in the process...

the Vera Wang dress I thought MIGHT be my dress - but wasn't...

In two months of shopping, I went to six different wedding dress shops and tried on probably 60 or so gowns. It can be overwhelming because there is so much to choose from, but in the end I found the perfect one for me!

pomposo

On Saturday Suchi and I went to Neiman Marcus to see if they had the adorable red Stuart Weitzman shoes I blogged about a few weeks ago. As luck would have it - they had them in my size. In person they looked to be somewhat lighter than they looked online (see below). I thought that this might be fate. (Thanks Suchi for sending the picture over!)

However, I spoke too soon! I found the same pair in black (and in my size) on the sale rack at Macy's for over $200 off the original price! I immediately snapped them up. The heel is pretty high (strangely enough, it is about an inch higher than on the red ones - I did a side by side comparison), so I will probably not be comfortable.

I am going to wear them to a wedding in a few weeks, so now I just have to figure out what else I will wear...

wedding shoes?

I love shoes and I find myself thinking about what shoes I want to wear at our wedding. I balance comfort with looks. I have decided that at the rehearsal dinner I will wear really fun high shoes, so at the wedding I think I will opt for something lower. That being said, these white bow d'orsay Christian Louboutin's are my dream wedding shoes if I wanted to spend a fortune on white satin shoes that I would never wear again.

Going for something more comfortable, I have been looking for low heeled shoes that were still cute. What do you think of these Kate Spades? I love the top view, I'm just not sure how I feel about the kitten heel. I also haven't picked out my wedding dress yet - so maybe I should make sure that they work together. I am jumping the gun I think.

And while we are on the subject of wedding shoes, check out my friend Suchi's wedding shoes. Gorgeous! I love fun shoes.

mother of the bride

My mom sent me a few mother of the bride outfits she was thinking about. Both come from Nordstrom. I like the above dress for the lacy top, sleeve length, keyhole back, and the longer length. I like the dress below because it is in my mom's favorite shimmery color and the jacket is a very flattering shape with pretty details. I also think that dress #1 will be cooler in the New Orleans heat (no jacket). Which do you prefer?

save the date

save the date card from Wedding Paper Divas

We have yet to pick our save the date cards, but right now this is my leading contender. It is called summer breeze and it is printed on what looks and feels like ivory watercolor paper.

Another option would be to go for something more New Orleans-ish, like these save the dates with gas lamps that my mom found at a local stationary store.

What do you think? I think I would give the summer breeze card the edge...

whitney smith

Last year at the Palo Alto Clay and Glass Festival, I fell in love with the work of a bay area potter named Whitney Smith. I bought two pieces (see below) - I went back two days in a row, buying one piece the day after. I am on Whitney's mailing list and she let us know she will have some new pieces. So excited to check them out! This year's festival will be this Saturday and Sunday (7/11 - 7/12) in Newell Park in Palo Alto from 10am to 5pm. I can't wait! There are other potters that I look forward to seeing too - but Whitney is my favorite.

I tell you this because Whitney Smith has a wedding registry. I am SO going to register with her (although my fiance thinks a $130 cake plate is ridiculous). I tell him that it is art! Lovely ceramic art! Although I am not sure I can wait for a wedding registry... it is too far away! I will post soon with what I want to register for. On the short list are a cake plate, a creamer and sugar set, and the scalloped dessert plates...

full disclosure - I took ceramics in college, and again in grad school... I know my love is not rational. It started after a trip to Italy in college on a study trip. Piles of pots!

p.s. If I didn't mention it before, although I am from Louisiana and getting married in New Orleans... I currently live in the San Francisco bay area.

setting the mood...

I love mood boards - I hope to try my hand at eventually creating one for our wedding. Of all the wedding stuff I have seen, the board below is still at the top of the pile. It was put together by one of my favorite bloggers at Snippet and Ink and has helped me to imagine our wedding. I love everything about it, although my mom would rather their not be fresh flowers on the cake (which I am totally fine with).

bloom and groom

I love J. Crew, so much that I always thought that I would buy my wedding dress there. I don't think I will find my wedding dress there, but it is the leading contender for the bridesmaid dresses. I posted this photo because I love her bouquet, the groom's outfit, and the overall feel of the photo. Our colors are going to be lavender, blue, and white - so I am always looking at how others incorporate those colors.

Thanks to Haven and Home for scanning the photo!

red, white, and blue

the bouquet at Kelley's wedding

Given that it is the fourth of July, I wanted to post something with a little red, white, and blue. I thought I would share the bouquet from Kelley's wedding last summer. It was a gorgeous bouquet with black magic roses, latin lady roses, dark calla lilies, white hydrangea, currants, and dahlias (among other things). The bridesmaids wore red dresses. It was really pretty.

She also made the seating cards with her mom, color coded red, white, or blue to represent meal choice.

Happy fourth of July!

lovely light cake

Isn't this cake so lovely? I haven't thought too much about cakes, but this one caught my eye in Marth Stewart Weddings. I love the way that the wide coconut shavings look like feathers - feels light and feminine. I could just see a litle vintage ceramic cake topper on top...

Mallory's wedding

My brother is getting married in October and I will be a bridesmaid along with my sister. Our bridesmaid dresses are silver and we will be wearing silver shoes of our choosing. I just ordered these Nine West silver shoes in my size for $39.99. Seems like a pretty good deal to me! Hopefully they look good with the dress.

In the end, I may want something more metalic to go with the dress. Even if I don't end up wearing these shoes to the wedding - I think that they will look really cute with other things in my wardrobe (like my charcoal wool trousers and a red satin clutch).

Favorite dress yet to be tried on

Right when I first got engaged I saw this dress in a magazine. I have since hunted it down and will get to try it on in a week and a half at a local bridal shop. So excited!

Although I am not sure how I feel about the back of the dress. I am looking forward to seeing it in person.

petal pink

A few weeks ago I went wedding dress shopping with two other friends - who also happen to be brides. We missed one appointment because we were running late, so to kill time before the next one we went to Neiman Marcus. They were having a big sale, and as fate would have it - they had one pair of lovely blush petal Christian Louboutin shoes half off and in my size. Seeing as they are the perfect wedding event shoe - I bought them! I am planning to wear them to many many wedding events. I am thinking of wearing them to my rehearsal dinner - I pulled together my inspiration below. I love the necklace, is it too much with the shoes?

red satin shoes

Martha Stewart Weddings - Cheree Berry

Let it be known that I have a thing for shoes, and there is nothing like an impending wedding to make me want to disregard any kind of budget for attire. I spotted these red shoes in this month's issue of Martha Stewart Weddings in a feature about stationary designer Cheree Berry's wedding. The shoes are called Pomposo and are made by Stuart Weitzman. They cost $325 and come in while, black, or ruby satin. While I really want them, I am taking it as a sign that they are sold out in my size.

the beginning

“I tell those old stories, but they’re not what I want to tell. I only know how I want peple to feel when I tell them.”
- John Steinbeck, “The Leader of the People”

I wrote down the above line when I read “The Leader of the People” years ago in high school. Since then, I often find myself coming back to it, especially when I think about the wedding. I know how I want to feel, how I want our guests to feel – loved, happy, joyous. The hard part is translating a feeling or a mood into the details that accompany planning a wedding – and that is what I hope to discover with you.
